In this Desmos activity, students were provided with real-life images of objects, buildings, shapes, or logos that naturally contained parabolic curves. They analyzed the images and used their understanding of quadratic equations to create mathematical models that closely matched the parabolic shapes.
After reflecting on the activity, we decided to incorporate more culturally relevant examples that better represented the diverse backgrounds of our students. By including images of architecture, symbols, and objects from their own cultures and communities, we aimed to make the activity more meaningful and relatable, helping students see the connections between mathematics and their lived experiences.
